The latest standard of network cable is also Category 7, Category 8 network cable (Coptic flat network cable, Category 7, Category 8 are new appearance, new shape), but its transmission distance is limited, and can not solve long-distance data transmission, then for long-distance transmission can use optical fiber.

Optical fiber is divided into multimode and singlemode, and multimode transmits a farther distance than the network cable, but is shorter than singlemode.

In 10Mbps and 100Mbps Ethernet, multimode fiber can support a maximum transmission distance of 2000 meters;

In a 1GbpS Gigabit network, multimode fiber can support a transmission distance of up to 550 meters.

Therefore, multimode is now used less.

Compared with multimode fiber, single-mode fiber can support longer transmission distances, from 100Mbps Ethernet to 1G Gigabit network, single-mode fiber can support more than 5000m transmission distance.

The components used in single-mode optical modules are twice as large as those of multi-mode optical modules, so the overall cost of single-mode optical modules is higher than that of multi-mode optical modules. The transmission distance of single-mode optical modules can reach 150 to 200 km.

Therefore, for long-distance transmission, optical fiber can be used to solve the problem, such as remote monitoring projects.
